Our Story: From Modest Beginnings to Chess Legacy
Humble Foundations: Bonteheuwel, 1976 The story of Steinitz Chess Club begins in Bonteheuwel in late 1976, on Cape Town’s Cape Flats. It was here that six young chess enthusiasts—primary school pupils Andrew Talmarkes and the late Jeremy Lewis, together with high school members Mark Lewis, Nazeem Majiet, Norman McQueen, and Ebrahim Ortell—founded what became the Steinitz Chess Club.
