Lucy Khuphwathea is a promising junior chess player from the Steinitz Chess Club and the eldest daughter of CM Paul Khuphwathea, a well respected coach hailing from Malawi.

In 2025, Lucy placed 2nd at the Central District tournament, demonstrating her competitive edge among a very strong field. She followed this up at the Western Cape High Schools Individuals in Vredenburg, where she posted an 80% win-rate, showing strong consistency and resilience under pressure. Lucy’s performances have earned her a place representing the Western Cape Under-16 team in the 2025 Mzansi Interprovincial Tournament, marking an important step in her chess career as she moves into larger provincial and national-level events. With the mentoring of her father and support from Steinitz, Lucy is developing a style grounded in disciplined play, tactical sharpness, and steady growth. She’s one to watch in youth chess in the Western Cape and beyond.
